Our Nature Walk on the Golden Way

On the 7th of October 4th, 5th and 6th class went on a nature trail walk on the Golden Way with Heather Botwell, who is a county Cavan heritage officer and nature expert. We went for a 2-hour walk behind Templeport community centre along the old railway line. We had plastic bags to collect all of the different types of leaves, berries and flowers. Heather explained all about these plants and gave us plenty of facts, while Isobel Rofe took photographs during the walk. Heather also showed us a stuffed otter and a mouse that she had caught that morning! During lunch, Oliver Brady told us about the history of the railway station and line. After lunch in the community centre, Heather showed us how to use all the insect catching equipment. We were put in small groups and we caught bugs using pooters, beating trays and nets. Sticks were used for hitting the bushes and the insects were caught on the beating tray. Heather explained what each of the insects were and where they normally live. Some of the insects we found were harvest spiders, flies, snails, beetles, midges and slugs. It was great fun. We did a project on it afterwards, where we labelled all the plants and laminated them.

Currin N.S. Boys Cumann na mBunscol

Written by Ryan McCarron

The Currin N.S Boys football team have made it to the semi-final of the Cumann na mBunscol. We played Castletara in our first match. It was close in the first half but then Castletara put on a few strong players and at the end we lost by ten points. Our next game was against Killeshandra. We were beating them by a few points in the first half but in the second half, with the aid of the breeze, we ran out easy winners. Our next game was against Ballyhaise. In the first half we were beating them by eight points but in the second half they put on a super sub so we put Conor Donohoe on him to stop him from scoring. We lost our concentration for a while and they got three goals on us. However, we weathered the storm and thanks to two late goals we held on.  We won by six points and now we are in the semi-final.
