Green schools "Leave No Trace" workshop

29/05/2017 18:22

On Friday 26th May, Ruth Van Rys from Ecoschools Northern Ireland visited us to deliver a workshop entitled "Leave No Trace". This workshop focussed on reducing litter and waste, and ensuring that we leave no trace behind us when we explore our outdoor environment, which reinforces all the work we are doing in the school to achieve our Green Schools flag for litter and waste.

After a presentation and quiz, we went on a field trip. On this trip, we visited the original site of the Killycluggin stone (ring fort) behind the school, where we learned about the history of the stone and its excavation. We then participated in a number of activites including a scavenger hunt, tree and plant identification, tree and leaf rubbings, colour palette matching and pencil drawings. We also visited the replica stone at Killycluggin crossroads, and got an impromptu history lesson about the stone from Tony and Martina Bannon! We found out that Tony's grandfather, Willie, owned the land where the Killycluggin stone was discovered.

See Gallery for all the photographs.

Bawnboy Workhouse 1916 Commemorative Garden - official opening

14/05/2017 23:16

We attended the opening ceremony of the 1916 Commemorative Garden at Bawnboy workhouse on Friday 12th May. Five schools in the locality were invited by the Bawnboy Workhouse committee to perform for an audience outside the workhouse.  We performed the song 'Grace' and acted out a scene from the 1916 Rising. Congratulations to the committee for organising a very successful commemoration and for their tireless work to preserve the workhouse. We are learning all about workhouses in history lessons in school presently and it was a fantastic opportunity to be involved in this event at this hugely important historical site. Local historian and committee secretary, Dympna Headen, will visit our school over the coming weeks to give us a more in-depth knowledge of the workhouse and famine times in our locality.

All the photos from the day are uploaded to the Gallery.

Our School Garden is Complete!

19/02/2017 18:32

The finished project.

A fantastic community effort on Saturday 18th February ensured that our school garden was completed in one day! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who worked so hard to create this amazing space for all the children in the school. A special word of thanks to Kieran McGovern and also Paul Maguire who had a huge amount of preparatory work completed on the fencing prior to Saturday, and also for power hosing the paths after the work. Thanks to everyone who supplied materials and equipment, and finally to Verna Mills, Maggie Geoghegan, Patricia McGovern, Karen McCauley and Patricia Maguire who kept the troops supplied with tea, soup, sandwiches and biscuits throughout the day!

The school garden is a great addition to our school facilities as it will provide practical "hands-on" learning for the children on how to grow local organic food and will demonstrate important examples of native habitats and bio-diversity. There will be plenty of work for 74 pairs of hands to get stuck into over the next few weeks!!

The gang taking a well deserved tea-break!

Operation Transformation 10@10

11/02/2017 18:53

We completed the Operation Transformation 10@10 challenge last Friday on a bitterly cold morning! This was a challenge set down by the RTE programme for every school in the country to spend 10 minutes completing a range of physical activites on February 10th at 10am.

5th and 6th class set up 10 stations around the school yard, and groups rotated around the circuit spending one minute on each station. Stations included skipping, sit-ups, press-ups, obstacle courses, sprints, balance beam and ladder.

Well done to all the children for completing the challenge! Photographs of all the action are in the Gallery now.
